BURKINA FASO: Bishops Express Worry over Increased Attacks in Sahel Region

OUAGADOUGOU, AUGUST 27, 2021 (CISA)-The Episcopal Conference of Burkina Faso and Niger (CEBN) has condemned the increasing attacks orchestrated by jihadist groups in the Sahel region calling on citizens to join together in prayer for peace and stability in the region shared by Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.

This follows recent killings of 47 people in Burkina Faso on August 18 in an attack on a convoy on the Arabinda-Gorgadji road, and in Niger on the night of August 24-25, in Baroua in the Diffa region 19 people were killed in an attack by suspected jihadists on a village in the Tillabe’ri region of western Niger.

“It is with dismay and sorrow that the Bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Burkina-Niger learned of the terrorist attack which has once again plunged our country into mourning,” members of the Episcopal Conference of Burkina-Niger (CEBN) say in the statement issued, August 23.

“In these painful circumstances, we extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved families and to the entire population in Burkina Faso affected by this tragedy. We wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the bishops said while condemning the attacks in the statement signed by CEBN President, Bishop Laurent Dabiré of Dori, Burkina Faso.

CEBN directed that each bishop convenes prayers for the victims of the attacks and for peace in Burkina Faso.
