KENYA: Police Chief Resigns as Latest Terror Attack Kills 37

NAIROBI, DECEMBER 2, 2014(CISA) – David Kimaiyo has resigned following the death of 37 people in the latest terror attacks in Mandera and Wajir Counties.

President Uhuru Kenyatta in an address to the nation nominated  retired General and Kajiado Central Mp Joseph Nkaissery,as the new Interior Cabinet Secretary.

President Uhuru announced the changes on Tuesday December 2 while addressing the country from State House following the Mandera attack that happened at a quarry in Kormey, Mandera County near the Somalian border by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

The President acknowledged the weaknesses in the security sector but stated “in due course our security situation will turn around.”

He reminded county governments of their responsibility to work with the national government and called on the media to “become an honest broker of national discourse,” adding. “We come to the aid of terrorists when we shout at each other.”

According to Police, the victims of the latest attack in Mandera were ambushed at around 1 am as they were sleeping in tents at the site, where they were made to line up and most of them shot on the head while some were beheaded, reported the Nation.

Kormey is about 15 kilometres from Mandera, in an area where the Somalia-based Al Shabaab militants are known to operate.

The attack happened just four hours after one person was shot dead and 13 others got injured after an attack at a club in Wajir.

The masked attackers raided Ngamia Club, about 800 metres from Wajir police station and shot indiscriminately at the revellers. After the club attack, the gunmen raided Kenya Power sub–station but were repulsed by the officers who were guarding the area.

On November 22, a Nairobi-bound bus was attacked and 28 passengers were shot dead at Omar Jillo in Mandera County.
