NAIROBI JANUARY 6, 2015(CISA) – The government through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will monitor the performance of the striking teachers starting Tuesday January 6, according to a circular issued on Monday.
TSC in the circular recalled all county and sub-county directors on leave to oversee the opening of schools across the country.
“In addition, all field officers are required to urgently put in place mechanisms to monitor the opening of schools and performance of all teachers employed by the commission,” stated the circular in part.
This comes even as the planned teachers’ strike kicked off across the country.
The field officers will be required to ensure all teachers report to school and that the head teachers and principals supervise learning and submit a daily roll call of teachers and learners via email every day at 4pm.
Pupils who were scheduled to open schools on Monday were either turned away or remained in school alone without teachers.
On Monday January 5, The Ministry of Labour intervened over the teachers’ remuneration negotiations following the collapse of earlier talks between the TSC and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi said in a statement that he had invited all involved parties for an urgent joint conciliation meeting on Tuesday morning.
“Following the collapse of the negotiations between the TSC and KNUT and strike by teachers, the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services has today taken over the talks as conciliator,” Kambi said in a statement sent to newsrooms.
Kambi explained that this was in line with “the Labour Relations Act, 2007 section 70.”
“I have invited the parties to the dispute to a joint conciliation meeting on Tuesday 6th January 2015 from 10am,” he added.
