NAIROBI AUGUST 11, 2015(CISA) – The Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi collected Ksh 108M (USD 1.2 M) for the past one year through the Archdiocesan parishes and other contributions.
The announcement was made by the Nairobi Archdiocese Finance committee during the annual Family Day August 8 at St. Mary’s School grounds, Msongari in Nairobi.
According to the Finance committee the collections are part of the amount that will go towards completion of Cardinal Otunga Plaza Annex, located within the premises of the Holy Family Minor Basilica in Nairobi and construction of an underground parking that will accommodate 500 cars.
Construction of the parking will cost Ksh 1billion (USD 10M)
Speaking during the annual celebrations, Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi, John Cardinal Njue urged the laity to actively participate in evangelizing the family.
“While the Church is committed towards its role, the faithful should equally make their contributions towards this direction,” said Cardinal Njue adding “This way, we shall be able to battle out some of the challenges facing the family today.”
The theme of this year’s annual family day was “God saw that everything He had made, and behold it was very good.”
The same occasion witnessed the commissioning of the Archdiocesan family life animators as well as members of the family life Advisory Board.
“We thank you for accepting the invitation to play the role that is assigned to you… I urge you to take this responsibility with real dedication because the more the family remains united, the more the family remains real then we can be sure that the society is strengthened and even the church is strengthened,” Cardinal Njue told the Animators.
Speaking during the same event, Bishop Anthony Muheria of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui lamented corruption and immorality in society and urged faithful to lead the way in fighting such vices.
“Let us not participate in issues that are not in line with the teaching of the Church, simply because they are being done by other people. Let us make every effort to be corruption-free and practice the moral uprightness for our religious goodness and equality for others to emulate us,” said Bishop Muheria.
The function was also attended by Bishop Maurice Muhatia of Nakuru Diocese, Bishop John Oballa Ole Owaa of Ngong Diocese, Bishop David Kamau of Auxiliary bishop of Nairobi Archdiocese and Bishop Théophile Kaboy Ruboneka of the Catholic Diocese of Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo.
