ACCRA JUNE 10, 2016(CISA)-Caritas Ghana, a branch of Caritas Internationalis, which pursues the Catholic Church’s pastoral role, was on June 2 launched at the International Press Centre in Accra.
Speaking when he launched the organization, Most Reverend Gabriel A. A. Mante President of Caritas Ghana and Bishop of the Jasikan Diocese said that it will “promote effective institutional structures and functioning of the Church’s service of charity at National, Diocesan and Parish levels.”
“Caritas has taken initiatives to bring about change in the lives of affected and at-risk communities and would promote the Catholic Church’s Socio-pastoral work as a means of expressing the gospel message and the social doctrine of the church,” said Bishop Mante adding that “It will contribute to the enhancement of the dignity of the human person; especially the poor and the marginalized through their direct empowerment and their representation where they are excluded.”
Bishop Mante said that that there was already existing Memorandum of Understanding and other means of authentic collaboration and cooperation with UN Bodies like the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Regional Governments like the European Union and the National Governments in some countries like Germany, The Netherlands, South Sudan.
Also present was Sheikh Arimyaw Shaibu- Spokesperson of the National Chief Imam; Barrister Elizabeth Anderson- Yeboah who chaired the event; Executive Secretary of Caritas Ghana Mr Samuel Zan Akologo; Rev Fr. Emmanuel Abbey-Quaye Assistant Secretary General of the National Catholic Secretariat.
