LESOTHO: Church Leaders Call for Free and Fair Elections

MASERU MAY 16, 2017(CISA)-Christian Council of Lesotho has called on Lesotho’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to speed up preparations to conduct free and fair General elections in June 3.

“We are glad preparations for elections are underway. The Independent Electoral Commission must keep working around the clock to try to manage the process. What we demand come the election day is free, transparent and fair elections,” Archbishop Gerard Tlali Lerotholi,O.M.I, Chairperson of Heads of Churches of the Christian Council of Lesotho (CCL) said in a statement sent to CISA May 15.

They called on the out-going government to implement all electoral reforms to ensure that the process is conducted peacefully.

The Council urged all party leaders to ensure that they stick to the pledge they had signed to enable implementation of reforms.

“All political party leaders who signed a pledge to ensure implementation of electoral reforms must abide by it,” wrote Archbishop Tlali, Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Maseru and President of Lesotho Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

The council appealed to political leaders to join hands together with the church and pray for the success of the elections.

Lesotho will be going for the third general election since 2012 after a motion of vote of no confidence was passed in the current Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili and his government.

King Letsie III, later dissolved parliament paving way for the General elections.
