NAIROBI MARCH 10, 2017 (CISA) – Education Cabinet Secretary, Dr Fred Matiang’i has said that head teachers should be responsible for protecting learners from bullying and mistreatment in schools.
“When there is a problem and discomfort in our schools it is clear to all of us who should take responsibility. Nothing replaces presence in schools, and as head teachers we need to spend time with our children,” he said.
“You have to take responsibility for what happens in your school,” stated the Education CS who asserted that the government will be firm in dealing with the issue of bullying. “Bullying is a matter that is agonizing to all of us and we will confront the issue with near ruthlessness.”
Dr Matiang’i was speaking March 8, during the Conference for the Catholic Private Educational Institutions Associations (CAPEIA) at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi.
Dr Matiang’i further said that the Catholic Church has made immense contribution in education in the country noting that in addition to the 1500 private Catholic Schools, the Church sponsors a huge number of national schools.
“The Catholic Church is a principal partner to the government in the provision of education in our country. We appreciate this and as a ministry of education and as government, we are ready, willing and available to also be a worthwhile partner,” he stated.
The four day conference (March 7 – 10) was under the theme “Catholic Schools-Hubs of Integrity” and was attended by 450 delegates from all over the country.
CAPEIA was launched in 2015 and brings together nursery, primary, high schools, and colleges run by the Catholic Church in Kenya.
