NAIROBI DECEMBER 9, 2014(CISA) – Bishop Martin Kivuva Musonde has been named the new Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa.
Pope Francis elevated the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Machakos to head the Archdiocese of Mombasa on Tuesday December 9.
According to the Archbishop Charles Balvo, the Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya bishop Kivuva will be officially introduced to the Archdiocese of Mombasa on December 19 2014.
The archdiocese of Mombasa became vacant following the resignation of the late Archbishop Boniface Lele in November 2013.
Bishop Emmanuel Barbara of the Catholic Diocese of Malindi has been serving as Apostolic Administrator since November 2013.
Bishop Martin Kivuva was born in Muthetheni in February 10, 1952. He was ordained priest in Mombasa on December 9, 1978.
He was appointed the Catholic bishop of Machakos in March 15, 2003 and ordained in June 3, 2003.
He took over from the late Bishop Emeritus of Machakos Urbanus Kioko who served the diocese for 29 years.
Since his installation as bishop, Bishop Kivuva has seen the number of parishes rise from 42 to 72.
During his watch the diocese saw a record of 30 priests ordained in the same day at the Komarock shrine in Machakos diocese.
Bishop Kivuva’s appointment as Archbishop coincides with the 36th anniversary of his ordination as a priest.
