ETHIOPIA: Four Nuns Killed in Road Accident

ADDIS ABABA MARCH 10, 2017(CISA)-Four religious sisters from the congregation of the Daughters of St. Anne including the provincial superior, died in a road accident on March 7.

According to CNA, four others were critically injured when a truck hit their van they were travelling on near the Ethiopian town of Meki.

The sisters were travelling to Hawassa city for a funeral of one of the sisters’ relatives.

The four dead have been identified as Sr Weinshet Gebru, the provincial superior and head of  formation house; Sr Motu Baba, former administrator of Guder Girls’ Orphanage; Sr Hanna Bekute, former director of Guder Catholic School and Sr Gedena Weldu.

The Daughters of St. Anne have served in Ethiopia and Eritrea for more than 50 years involved in pastoral and human formation. They run schools, health facilities, cutting and sewing schools, vocational training centres, orphanages, and a school for the visually impaired.

The congregation celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2016.
