KENYA: Bishops Welcome Political Leaders Move to Seal Electoral Body’s Stalemate

NAIROBI JUNE 24, 2016(CISA) – Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has welcomed the government and the opposition’s Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) move to jointly table a motion in parliament to amend the electoral commission’s act and ensure peaceful elections next year.

“This move shows political maturity and respect of the constitution, institutions and rule of law,” said the Catholic Bishops in a statement signed by KCCB General Secretary Fr Daniel Kimutai Rono.

As your shepherds, said the bishops “we assure you of our continued prayers for voice of reason to prevail as the Parliamentary Select Committee embarks on the task ahead of them.”

“At the same time, we urge the public and all the people of good will to give the team the support they need as they work to deliver on their mandate,” said the bishops in the statement sent to CISA June 24.

On June 22, CORD and Jubilee agreed on the motion to establish a Parliamentary Joint Select Committee on matters relating to the electoral body.
