MALAWI: Churches Say No to Abortion and Same Sex Marriage Bill

LILONGWE DECEMBER 13, 2016 –Members of the Catholic Church and Evangelical marched on the streets of Malawi to demonstrate against the proposed Abortion and Same Sex Marriages Bill.

According to AMECEA news the Christians  came out through their mother bodies, Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) and Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM), on December 6, from all the 28 districts to speak against the proposed bill.

Speaking to the multitude that turned up for the march, Secretary General for the ECM Fr Henry Saindi noted that Malawi is not a secular state but rather  a God Fearing nation with no need to legalize abortion and same sex marriages.

The march was celebrated by members from different religious beliefs such as Quadria Association of Malawi, Church for Central Africa Presbyterian and the Rastafarian community, was under the theme ‘Lighting the Candle’  dubbed Citizens March for Life and Family.

Julliana Lunguzi, a parliamentarian who received the petition as chairperson of Parliamentary Committee of Health issues, assured the gathering that they will act according to the people wishes.

“I am a Catholic, a woman and at the same time a professional nurse and I wouldn’t accept the abortion bill and same sex marriages. Pray for us so that we are guided by the Holy Spirit once we are in the August House,” she said.
