MALAWI: Pope Appoints Fr Peter Chifukwa new Bishop of Dedza

VATICAN, MAY 11, 2021(CISA)-Pope Francis has appointed Fr Peter Adrian Chifukwa as the new bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Dedza.

The Saturday May 8 announcement was done at noontime (12.00 pm local time in Malawi) at the Vatican City.

“We have every reason to rejoice and congratulate the Bishop-elect as through his appointment we witness yet another indication of divine providence and the pastoral care  of Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd,” read a May 8 statement by  Fr Henry Saindi Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM).

Fr Peter was born August 27, 1973 in Msampha Village, Dedza district, Malawi. He was ordained priest on June 12, 2004.

He has previously served as assistant Parish Priest at Dedza Parish 2004-2005, Parish Priest of Ganya Parish 2005-2007 and bishop’s Secretary (2010-2011). From 2007 to 2010 Fr Chifukwa studied canon law at the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi.

Until his appointment, he was Rector at St. Kizito Minor Seminary  (2011-2021). Judicial Vicar (2010-2021) and Chaplain to the Presentation Sisters (2010-2021).
