MALI: Nun Kidnapped by Unknown Assailants

KOUTIALA FEBRUARY 10, 2017 (CISA) -Two suspects have been arrested by Mali security forces following the kidnapping of Sister Gloria Cecilia Narvez Argoti February 7.

Sister Gloria, of the Franciscan sisters of Mary Immaculate was kidnapped from Karangasso Parish in Koutiala at around 9 pm by unknown assailants and got away with the parish ambulance, reported Fides.

“We do not know who the kidnappers are. The Gendarmerie and the police are investigating. The bishops are also in the area to get information,” said Fr Edmond Dembele, the secretary general of the Episcopal Conference of Mali.

The kidnapping was a surprise to many as the area is usually a peaceful place uncontaminated by the insecurity that haunts other regions in Mali. The nun is yet to be found and rescue operations for the nun is currently underway.

The suspects were arrested the following day while heading to Burkina Faso in the ambulance they had stolen.

Not long ago a similar incident took place in DR Congo where a priest was kidnapped and later on released by members of a militia belonging to the late Kamuina Nsapu
