MZIMBA, JANUARY 16, 2015 (CISA) – Bishop Joseph Mukasa Zuza of the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu died in a car crash on Thursday January 15.
According to the Catholic Secretariat of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), Bishop Zuza died from serious injuries he sustained in the accident in Chikangawa near Nthungwa in Mzimba district, reported CNA.
“He passed on while being attended to in Mzuzu Central Hospital,” said Fr Andrew Kaufa, ECM Communications Secretary in a statement.
The bishop was driving along the Chikangawa-Nthungwa road, returning to Mzuzu, and his car rolled several times stated Fr Kaufa. He was rushed to the hospital in Mzuzu, where he died.
The late bishop will be remembered for speaking out for justice and defending the marginalised through his courageous and fearless sermons.
Bishop Zuza was born in 1955 in Malembo. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Mzuzu in 1982 and appointed Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Mzuzu by St. John Paul II in 1995. He had been president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Malawi since 2011.
