KENYA: Africa Needs Social Values in order to Grow, Environment CS Says

NAIROBI, MAY 29, 2015 (CISA) – “Passion and social values such as honesty competence commitment and prayer are the ingredients Africa needs to grow economically socially and spiritually,” Prof Judi Wakhungu, Cabinet Secretary, Environment, Water and Natural Resources has said.

Prof Wakhungu was speaking today at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) during the university’s 31st graduation ceremony where she was the chief guest.

“I urge you to cherish and use the social values passed to you effectively… not to destroy but to build and transform our communities and by doing so you will transform the world as a whole,” she said.

Prof Wakhungu further said that education is what brings people together and urged the graduands to continue learning since “knowledge is the best antidote to and against ignorance, fanaticism and hatred.”

The Vice Chancellor of CUEA Msgr Dr Pius Rutechura on his part said: “In the past few years we have noticed with concern the increasing number of youths around this country and in the region being involved in drug abuse and moral decadence.”

“It is not surprising that such youths are easily lured to participate in crime, the Garissa Massacre is one of such case in mind. This cannot take us far,” he said and urged parents, sponsors together with learning institutions and other stakeholders to step to up efforts to curb out such trends before it is too late.

Dr Rutechura advised the graduands that the academic excellence attained is not an end in itself; “it is the foundation, a stepping stone for service in church and society.”

“Go forth and apply yourself to the task of transforming yourselves, your neighbour and the entire continent of Africa.”
