PORT LOUIS JUNE 09, 2015 (CISA) – Ameena Gurib-Fakim was on June 5 inaugurated as the sixth head of state of the Republic of Mauritius making her the first female president of the Indian Ocean Island.
Speaking to TED global about her new post, she said, “It’s daunting. It is a huge responsibility. Something that requires a lot of psychological preparation, which I am trying to get. I am a scientist, so I am used to saying things as I see them. As president, I need to be much more diplomatic. I have to be careful and go in with kid gloves”.
The 56 year old was elected by the National assembly as per the constitution of Mauritius and was supported by the opposition as well.
“I have always believed in the equality of men and women,” Prime Minister Sir Anerood Jugnauth told the media.
Mauritius is a majorly patriarchal society and she said that being the first female president is “very big” for Mauritius and the continent of Africa.
Talking about her priorities, she said that she aims to create a high-income economy and create opportunities for her people, as well as pay attention to education and the environment.
“I strongly believe that science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship are the ingredients that will help advance this vision. Through the presidency, we can engage with the people, the public and private sector and realise this vision”.
President Ameena’s election follows the May 29 resignation of former president Kailash Purryag who had been president since July 2012.
