KENYA: Be Alert to Threats facing Religious Life, Bishop tells Nuns

KAKAMEGA JULY 7, 201(CISA) – Bishop Joseph Obanyi Sagwe of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega has challenged consecrated women to be alert to the threats to religious and Christian life being brought about by modern means of communication and technology.

The bishop, who is also the chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (KCCB) Commission for Social Communications, urged the sisters to “reawaken their faith and religious commitment in the midst of the myriad of challenges of the contemporary times so that the world conforms to Christ.”

Bishop Obanyi was speaking to over 150 religious women of the Sisters of Mary of Kakamega during a two day seminar on July 3-4 at their Mother House in Mukumu, Kakamega Diocese.

He reminded the sisters that this year of Consecrated life expects them to awaken themselves so that they, as the Holy Father has implored, “look at the past with gratitude, the present with passion and the future with hope.”

The seminar was organized for the Sisters of Mary who were celebrating their silver jubilees and above.

He further urged the sisters to intensify their prayers and commitment to the service of the Lord on challenges facing religious life as well as the institution of marriage and family life.

The seminar brought together sisters from dioceses in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and the US where the Sisters of Mary are currently serving.

The bishop advised the sisters that the best way of evangelization is life witness.

“As Sisters of Mary of Kakamega, strive to bring to the Church of God the children, youth, as well as the old by your way of life,” noted Bishop Obanyi.
