LILONGWE AUGUST 7, 2015(CISA)-Catholic Bishops in Malawi have urged the government to approve a climate change policy to put to end issues of environmental degradation that contribute to climate change.
Archbishop Thomas Msusa, Chairman of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) said during the launch of Pope Francis’s Encyclical Letter, entitled ‘Laudato Si’ in August 4 that the policy can provide guidelines to the nation in the process of mitigating climate change effects.
“We will make sure that all things affecting the lives of people are arrested and reversed,” Star Africa News quoted Archbishop Msusa as saying.
In a quick rejoinder, Malawi’s Minister of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining, Bright Msaka assured the church that the policy will be presented to Parliament soon.
“All work regarding this policy has been finalized and it could be tabled in parliament probably in December,” he said.
In the letter, Pope Francis is concerned with the depletion of natural resources and is calling on all humanity to join forces in conserving the environment for both current and future generations.
