OUAGADOUGOU SEPTEMBER 25 2015 (CISA) – Bishops of Burkina Faso have condemned the recent coup in the county which has “put a brutal end to the transition process and the expectations of an entire people.”
In a statement the bishops decried the violence that resulted from the coup which they said brought about “fatal consequences including loss of life, injuries and destruction of property” and they “offered their sincere condolences to the families of victims” reported Fides.
In their message the prelates further warned that if the coup had succeeded, the African Union would have imposed economic sanctions against Burkina Faso with disastrous consequences on a population who already live in precarious conditions.
The bishops urged parties involved to resolve the crisis through “true, clear, frank dialogue” and invited everyone to pray for peace in the Country.
The West African country was plunged into crisis a week ago when the powerful presidential guard detained the interim leaders – who had been in charge since a popular uprising deposed President Blaise Compaoré last October after his failed bid to extend his 27-year rule.
Members of the Regiment of Presidential Security (RSP) detained Interim President Michel Kafando and his Prime Minister Isaac Zida for more than two days, naming General Gilbert Diendéré, longtime aide to Compaoré, as the new leader of the country.
But on September 23, President Kafando was returned to power after emergency talks with the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), led by new Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari.
