KENYA: Use Dialogue not Strike, Bishop Urges Teachers

NAIROBI SEPTEMBER 4 2015 (CISA) – Bishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba, Chairman of Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) – Commission for Education and Religious Education has urged the education stakeholders to dialogue and find a solution to ongoing teachers strike.

“We urge the two Teachers Unions’ leaders, the Teachers Service Commission, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, the ministry of Education and Treasury to immediately enter into a dialogue and craft a collective payment formula for teachers,” said Bishop Muhatia.

Bishop Muhatia appealed for immediate re-opening of the schools to enable learning and candidates to prepare for national exams.

“Our children need to be kept busy leaning if we have to avoid their exposure to risky behaviours and situations,” states Bishop Muhatia of the Catholic Diocese of Nakuru.
The prelate blamed teachers’ perennial strikes for eroding the quality of education which in the long run could affect social and economic development negatively in the country.

He further called on teachers to be patient as the government worked out a payment structure in conformity with the ruling of High Court.

“The process of complying with the Court order must follow due process. We pray that all parties involved get into an agreement soonest possible for the sake of our children,” he said.
