TETE SEPTEMBER 8, 2014(CISA)-President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi of Mozambique has praised the role of the Catholic Church in the preservation of peace and national reconciliation in the country in the past years.
Speaking during a religious Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cathedral on September 7 in the western city of Tete, President Nyusi noted that “the Catholic Church has called on Mozambican society to value all people, particularly those who are most vulnerable and in need,” APA reported September 7.
“We are renewing our strength so that we can live in communion and reconciliation,” the president added when he presided over the central celebrations of Victory Day.
The celebrations marked the anniversary of the agreement on Mozambican independence signed in Lusaka on September 7, 1974 between the Mozambique Liberation Front or Frelimo and the Portuguese government.
President Nyusi’s appearance at the Mass in Tete coincided with celebrations in Maputo of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Catholic Archdiocese of Maputo.
He was represented at the Maputo jubilee ceremonies held in Machava stadium by Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario, who called on all religious believers, and on society at large, to take concrete action to maintain and consolidate peace.
Do Rosario said that “only with effective peace could all Mozambicans continue to work wonders in the coming period.”
He was referring to the theme of the Catholic celebrations, which was “Give thanks to the Lord for the wonders achieved during these years.”
