KENYA: Bishop Challenges Catholics to shun Corruption, set Good Example during the Lent

NGONG FEBRUARY 9, 2016 (CISA) – Bishop Cornelius Korir, chairman Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Justice and Peace Commission has urged Catholics in the county to shun corruption and show good example to other Kenyans during this Lenten period.

“There are a lot of things we need to look at as Catholics and as people of Kenya.  Ethnicity is a challenge in our country.  As we come closer to the elections again, we have to pray to God to change our hearts that we believe that we are one nation. It’s a challenge for each and every one of us but as Catholics should be example to others,” the bishop said.

“It can only go when we believe as Christians that we can see the face of God in our neighbours.  As Christians let us reflect on this,” he added.

The bishop was speaking during his homily at St Joseph the Worker Cathedral in the Catholic diocese of Ngong during the national launch of the Lenten Campaign 2016.

The bishop noted that corruption “is the root cause of all the challenges we are facing as a country. It cuts across all the other challenges… it is the major reason this country has never taken off economically.”

Bishop Korir and Bishop John Oballa Owaa flagged off the event that began with a walk from the Milele Mall in Ngong town to the Cathedral.

While welcoming the faithful to Ngong diocese, Bishop Oballa noted that the event was significant not only for the catholic faithful but also for all people  of good will, “to use this moment for soul searching for allowing God to touch their hearts to embrace the values that will enable us live in a Kenya that is peaceful and prosperous.”

The theme of this year’s Lenten campaign is Peaceful and Prosperous Kenya… My Responsibility.

During the period of lent catholic faithful are encouraged to meditate on five major issues: Responsible Citizenry, Care of our common home, Family Values, Insecurity and Corruption.
