NAIROBI APRIL 7, 2017 (CISA) – The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) today flagged off over eight tonnes of food to Kitui, Machakos and Homa Bay dioceses.
“This year the university has decided to be in solidarity with our brothers and sisters affected by drought in response to the call by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops and also the President of the Republic of Kenya through donation of relief food,” said Prof Justus Gitari Mbae, Vice Chancellor, CUEA.
Speaking after the flagging off ceremony at CUEA today, Prof Mbae said that the university has responded to the call as part of, “Living up to the community service pillar of our university and the calling to give to the needy during this Lenten Period.”
He noted that the university was further doing a research on ways of eliminating recurrent drought and hunger that hits Kenya every five or ten years.
“We want to find out the reasons for the recurrent drought so that we can contribute by giving permanent solutions to the problem,” said Prof Mbae.
On Saturday April 1 the university hosted, “Be your brother’s” keeper concert where students and well wishers donated food stuff to feed the hungry.
The donations came from the four campuses of the CUEA: Lang’ata – main campus, Nairobi City Centre, Kisumu and Gaba.
On March 17 John Cardinal Njue flagged off food donations from the Archdiocese of Nairobi to drought-stricken Isiolo and Marsabit Dioceses.
“The decision to mobilize food from our parishes came about from the realization that nearly half of the counties in Kenya are adversely affected by drought with millions of people facing starvation and in desperate need for food and water,” the Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nairobi said.
