KENYA: Kitui Diocese Organizes Gubernatorial Debate

KITUI AUGUST 1, 2017(CISA)-Hundreds attended the first ever Gubernatorial debate organized by the Catholic Diocese of Kitui on July 30 at Parkside Villa in Kitui County about 160 kilometers east of Nairobi City.

The debate pitted Kitui Senator David Musila against former Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu.

Through all the aspirants were invited, the incumbent governor Dr Julius Malombe did not attend the debate covered live on NTV and six local FM stations based in Ukambani.

“The elections will come and Go, Just like leaders will come and go but the foundation we build now based on peace will benefit us now in future and for the generations to come,” said Archbishop Muheria of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri and Apostolic Administrator of Machakos and Kitui dioceses.

He noted that the debate was meant to ensure to enable the residents listen to the leaders policies and a promise to keep peace in the county during and after the electioneering period.

The event was organized by the Catholic Diocese of Kitui – Caritas in consultation with Kitui Religious Leaders Forum (KRLF).

Led by Archbishop Muheria, all the aspirants, the three religious leader’s representatives from The KRLF also signed (His Grace Archbishop Anthony Muheria- Chair of the forum, Bishop Mwangagi – Evangelical Church- Vice chair, and Sheik Mutumbwa- SUPKEM – Executive member) committed by signing “ I Commit to Choose Peace for Our County.”

The signing was followed by all aspirants and the participants reciting the Prayer for Peaceful Election in 2017 prepared by KCCB CJPC during this year (2017) Lenten Campaign period.

Kitui County gubernatorial seat is highly contested. Even though the region is termed as National Super Alliance stronghold, various aspirants in the current regime who had acquired their seats on Wiper party ticket have since decamped to Jubilee setting the political competition very tough between Jubilee and NASA aspirants across the county.
