KITUI, MARCH 17, 2020 (CISA)-Pope Francis has appointed Fr Joseph Mwongela the new bishop of the Catholic diocese of Kitui. His appointment was announced today, Tuesday March 17 in Rome.
The Catholic diocese of Kitui fell vacant on April 23, 2017 when Most Rev. Anthony Muheria was transferred to the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri. Archbishop Muheria however continued serving Kitui as the Apostolic Administrator.
Fr Mwongela will become the fourth bishop of Kitui. He has been the Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui since March 6, 2015.
Fr Mwongela was born on April 7, 1968 in Kakumi, Kitui. He attended St. Mary’s Senior Seminary in the diocese of Nakuru, and St. Augustine’s Senior Seminary, Mabanga in the diocese of Bungoma, and later St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary in Narobi. Fr Mwongela was ordained priest on September 7, 1996 for the Catholic diocese of Kitui.
