ACCRA, MAY 8, 2020 (CISA)-Caritas Ghana in partnership with Star Ghana Foundation on May 2, donated GHS20, 000 to facilitate the resettlement of families affected by the April 15 demolition exercise at Old Fadama slum area in Accra.
“The gesture was presented to the affected 160 families comprising 630 slum dwellers by Mr. Samuel Zan Akologo executive secretary of Caritas Ghana in the company of Rev. Fr. George Ekow Mensah among other members in consonance with the Organisation’s charism,” reported Radio Angelus.
Mr. Samuel Zan Akologo, President of Caritas Ghana said that the exercise was geared towards helping the “vulnerable” who were adversely affected by the demolition exercise to restructure their lives.
“The demolishing had displaced many and rendered us homeless, a challenge that had brought us suffering…prior to the demolishing, fire had engulfed some of the wooden structures which had made the affected people to relocate to join others in their houses, resorting in about eleven or more people sleeping in one room,” Yussif Alhassan Antabayim, the leader of the victims of the demolition told the media.
He expressed fear that should the corona virus get to Old Fadama slums, it would spread like wildfire due to their current situation. He appealed to government to support them to return to their hometowns mostly in the five Northern Regions, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
