OYO, MAY 24, (CISA) – In responding to calls by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to protest the murder of Deborah Yakubu Samuel, Christians in Nigeria took to the streets in a march for justice while urging the authorities to speedy the prosecution of perpetrators.
In the streets of Oyo State and Badore Ajah, Lagos, the peaceful protesters carried placards inscribed, “WE DEMAND JUSTICE FOR DEBORAH,” “KILLERS OF DEBORAH MUST BE PROSECUTED,” “WE SAY NO TO ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS,” AND “LET PEACE BEGIN” among others.
The late Deborah Yakubu Samuel, aged 25, a student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto State, Nigeria, was on May 12, stoned to death and set ablaze on accusations of blasphemy by an irate group of young people.
It is believed that a group of young men crying ‘blasphemy’ were led into the school. They dragged her from school, flogging and stoning her and then covering her with tires, which were set on fire.
Her murder has since sparked outrage across the country with many condemning it and calling for perpetrators to face the wrath of the law. The Sokoto State Government has also closed the college till further notice.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) is the largest ecumenical body in Nigeria, bringing together many Christian denominations including the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), to promote understanding, peace and unity among the various people and strata of society through the propagation of the Gospel.
