VATICAN, MAY 10, 2022 (CISA) – Pope Francis, His Grace Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, and the Rt. Rev Jim Wallace, Moderator of the Church of Scotland, “In anticipation of our Pilgrimage of Peace,” are looking forward to visiting the Republic of South Sudan in the coming summer.
The world religious leaders in a joint statement published by the Holy See Press Office on May 7, and addressed to the political leaders of South Sudan urged the leaders to embrace a new path for their country.
“In this Easter season, we write to share with you our joy as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who shows us that a new way is possible: a way of forgiveness and freedom, which enables us humbly to see God in each other, even in our enemies. This path leads to new life, both for us as individuals and for those we lead, “the statement reads.
“It is our prayer that you will embrace afresh this way, in order to discern new avenues amid the challenges and struggles at this time. We pray too that your people will experience the hope of Easter through your leadership,” urged the religious leaders.
Pope Francis is set to visit Africa’s youngest nation from July 5 to 7, after visiting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from July 2 to 5. Preparations for the visit are on high, with reports of the venue for the papal mass already decided and committees formed from both the Catholic Church in South Sudan and the government.
“I pray that all may be one” is the motto that will accompany the Pope’s Apostolic Journey in Juba, South Sudan.
