KAMPALA, JUNE 21, 2022 (CISA) – The Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) called for the recognition of the dignity of the human person in accordance with the National constitution, human rights and teachings of the church in a statement dated June 18, after its plenary held between June 6 and 11.
The plenary came at the end of the celebration of the National Uganda Martyrs Day on June 3 and was held at St Augustine Institute, Nsambya.
“They encouraged the citizens of Uganda to work in unity and harmony as brothers and sisters in one and undivided nation,” read the statement in part, continuing, “They deplored the wide spread poverty, the soaring of prices and high cost of living. All challenges notwithstanding, the Bishops encouraged government in its strategic planning for the betterment of the human condition of life.”
In the statement signed by Rt Rev Joseph Antony Zziwa, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana, the Bishops and representatives moreover expressed concerns for the economy, industrialization, youth unemployment, refugees and migrants, climate change and its effects in light of the encyclical Laudato si as well as instability and insecurity in some parts of the country.
According to the statement, the Bishops furthermore, expressed concern over evangelization through education, medical, social and economic development, progress of institutions, challenges and their plans in the future.
The prelates additionally received status reports from Catholic affiliated institutions such as AMECEA, SECAM, Bible Institute of Uganda, Joint Medical Stores and ECLOF Uganda.
