VATICAN CITY, JANUARY 23, 2024 (CISA) – Pope Francis has appointed Archbishop Luís Miguel Muñoz Cárdaba, the titular of Nasai, until now apostolic nuncio in Sudan and Eritrea, as apostolic nuncio in Mozambique, the Holy See Press Office announced on January 23, 2024.
The Spanish-born papal diplomat who has been the nuncio to Sudan and Eritrea for almost four years takes over from Archbishop Piergiorgio Bertoldi who was posted to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico on May 18, 2023.
The former counsellor at the Apostolic Nunciature in Turkey was born in Vallelado, Spain, on August 25, 1965.
He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1992, and incardinated in the Catholic Archdiocese of Toledo, Spain.
He was sent to the Pontifical Spanish College in Rome to complete his ecclesiastical studies and obtained a doctorate in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Subsequently, he completed his degree in Canon Law at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross.
He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on April 1, 2001, and has worked at the Holy See missions in Greece, Mexico, Belgium, Italy, Australia, France and Turkey. He is fluent in Spanish, Italian, French and English.
