Wa, MAY 24, 2024 (CISA) – Pope Francis has appointed Fr Francis Bomansaan, M.Afr. , the vice Superior General of the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers), as the new bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wa, Ghana.
The news of his appointment was made by the Holy See Press Office on May 22, 2024. He will become the fifth bishop of the diocese after the late Cardinal Richard Kuuia Baawobr, the immediate former local ordinary of Wa, who died suddenly on November 17, 2022.
In a message announcing his appointment to the members of the Missionaries of Africa, the General Council currently meeting in Rome extended their heartfelt congratulations to Fr Bomansaan expressing their confidence in his ability to lead the diocese effectively and assured him of their prayers and fraternal support.
“Our sincere congratulations to Francis and the assurance of our prayers and our fraternal support in his new service of the Church,” read the statement in part and signed by Fr André-Léon Simonart, the General Secretary.
Fr Bomansaan served as a parish priest in the Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya, Tanzania, from 1991 to 1993. He then moved to Lublin, Poland, where he served as the director of vocational animation and formator from 1995 to 1998. He returned to Ghana in 1999, where he was the vocational director of the Missionaries of Africa and first advisor to the provincial superior for Ghana and Nigeria until 2003.
He was the provincial superior of the province of Ghana and Nigeria from 2005 to 2011. He was the master of novices at the International English Speaking Novitiate in Zambia from 2012 to 2019 and later as the head of the Addiction Rehabilitation Centre in Kenya from 2021 to 2022. Since 2022, he has been serving as the vice Superior General of the Missionaries of Africa.
