NAIROBI, SEPTEMBER 3, 2024 (CISA)– The Catholic community is deeply saddened by the passing of Fr David “Rector” Kiranga Njuguna, a revered priest and scholar whose life was marked by unwavering dedication to the Church and education.
Fr Njuguna, affectionately known as “Rector” by his colleagues and students, passed away on August 30, 2024, after a brief illness. His death has left a void in the hearts of many who admired his commitment to his faith and profound impact on philosophical education.
“Fr Njuguna was not just a priest; he was a mentor and a beacon of knowledge to many of us,” said a colleague who worked closely with him.
Fr Njuguna dedicated his life to serving God and the Catholic Church. He pursued his studies with passion, eventually earning a Doctor of Philosophy (D. Phil.) degree. His academic achievements and experience led him to become a respected figure in philosophical discourse, where he was known for his insightful teachings and scholarly contributions.
He was the rector of St. Augustine Senior Seminary, Mabanga, the only National Diocesan Philosophical Seminary in Kenya for over 15 years, a work that earned him the affectionate title “Rector,” a name that became synonymous with his identity.
“His academic rigour and deep understanding of theology were unparalleled. He challenged us to think critically and to deepen our faith,” recalled one of his former students.
Throughout his priestly ministry, Fr Njuguna was deeply committed to nurturing the spiritual and intellectual growth of future priests. He served as a spiritual director and mentor to countless seminarians, guiding them with wisdom and compassion. His influence extended beyond the classroom, as he was known for his pastoral care and dedication to his parishioners.
“Fr Njuguna’s guidance was invaluable. He had a unique way of connecting with people and making them feel understood,” said a faithful who often sought his counsel.
Fr Njuguna’s contributions to the Church were not limited to education. He was actively involved in various diocesan initiatives, working tirelessly to promote the Church’s mission and values. He remained humble and approachable, always ready to lend a listening ear or offer a word of encouragement.
“His humility and kindness were what stood out the most. He never sought recognition, yet his impact was felt by everyone around him,” noted a fellow priest who admired Fr Njuguna’s approach to ministry.
The news of Fr Njuguna’s passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes from the Catholic community and beyond. Many have expressed their gratitude for his life and the indelible mark he left on those who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy as a dedicated priest, educator, and mentor will continue to inspire future generations.
“We have lost a great man, but his teachings and the values he instilled in us will live on,” said a former seminarian who was deeply influenced by Fr Njuguna’s mentorship.
