LUSAKA, OCTOBER 25, 2024 (CISA) – As Zambia markED its 60th independence anniversary on October 24, the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) issued a passionate call for unity, justice, and shared responsibility in building a prosperous and equitable future.
With the theme “60 Years Strong: Honouring Our Heritage, Embracing Our Future,” the bishops urged citizens and leaders alike to reflect on the nation’s achievements and challenges, calling for a renewed commitment to Zambia’s values of love, peace, and integrity.
“As a Church, we are proud of the role we have played over the past six decades, alongside many others, in fostering national cohesion, justice, and unity as well as safeguarding human dignity,” said the bishops in a statement dated October 24 and signed by Fr Arthur Ntembula, Communications Director of the ZCCB.
Reflecting on the legacy of Zambia’s freedom fighters, the bishops said, “Their legacy is a reminder that the strength of our nation lies not only in its natural resources or political emancipation but in the moral fabric of its people.”
The prelates also addressed Zambia’s current challenges and encouraged a national dialogue to envision the Zambia of tomorrow.
“Sixty years of independence presents both a cause for celebration and an opportunity for introspection,” the statement reads while underscoring “We must ask ourselves questions such as: What kind of Zambia do we want to leave for the next generation? How do we address the challenges that persist in our society — poverty, inequality, corruption and the erosion of family values?”
The bishops specifically called on political and civic leaders to govern with integrity and place the welfare of Zambians above all else.
“True leadership is one that serves the common good, especially the most vulnerable,” the statement urged, noting that development must go hand in hand with peace, respect for human dignity, and protection of Creation.
The ZCCB also highlighted the vital role of faith in Zambia’s future, as the nation continues to uphold its Christian values.
“We encourage all Christ’s faithful to continue playing an active role in building a society grounded in Gospel values,” the bishops said.
