ACCRA, DECEMBER 3, 2024 (CISA) – As Ghana approaches a critical period with the upcoming General Elections on December 7,2024, to elect the president and members of parliament, the Catholic Bishops of Ghana have issued a powerful call for peace, justice, and unity.
In a pastoral letter dated November 30, 2024, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, Catholic Bishop of Sunyani and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC), urged Ghanaians to rise above political divisions and work together for the common good.
In the letter titled “The Season of Advent, the General Elections and the Jubilee Year,” the bishops reminded the faithful of their dual responsibilities as citizens and Christians during this time of uncertainty. They emphasized that faith and civic duty go hand in hand, especially as the nation prepares for significant political decisions.
“We urge all Catholics to engage responsibly in the electoral process, guided by the values of the Gospel,” said Bishop Gyamfi.
He stressed the importance of choosing leaders who prioritize the welfare of all, especially the marginalized, over personal ambition or divisive rhetoric, saying “Let us not be swayed by divisive rhetoric or empty promises but seek to promote candidates who will work for the welfare of all.”
Recognizing the anxieties that often accompany election seasons, the bishops underscored the need for peace and vigilance to ensure free and fair elections.
“Let us be vigilant in ensuring that the elections are free, fair, and peaceful,” the bishops stated.
The prelates appealed to political actors and citizens to place Ghana above political ambitions, emphasizing that only unity and justice can safeguard the nation’s future.
The bishops also called on Catholics to intensify their prayers during the Advent season, asking for divine guidance in choosing leaders and fostering reconciliation.
“We call upon all Catholics to intensify their prayer during this Advent season, praying for peace, justice, and reconciliation in our country,” they stated.
Advent and the Jubilee Year: A Time for Reflection and Renewal
The pastoral etter also drew attention to the dual significance of the Advent season and the Jubilee Year. Advent, a time of hopeful anticipation for the coming of Christ, provides an opportunity for spiritual renewal. Meanwhile, the Jubilee Year, rooted in biblical tradition, is a call to grace, restoration, and reconciliation.
“The Jubilee Year is a time of grace, restoration, and a call to conversion,” the bishops explained, referencing Leviticus 25. They urged Christians to reflect on their relationships, mend divisions, and embody the love of Christ in their actions.
They explained, “Just as Christ brought about the ultimate Jubilee through His life, death, and resurrection, so too are we called to bring the fruits of this Jubilee into our world, particularly in this election year.”
The bishops described the Advent season as a chance for both spiritual and societal preparation.
“Let us not only prepare our hearts for Christmas but also for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the political life of our country,” they urged, highlighting the importance of reflection, prayer, and action during this period.
The bishops emphasized the Church’s responsibility to serve as a beacon of hope in turbulent times, promoting peace, reconciliation, and justice. They encouraged acts of charity and service, urging Ghanaians to show compassion to the poor, the sick, and the marginalized.
“This is a time to show love and compassion… Let us embody the hope of Christ by bringing light to the dark places of our society,” urged the bishops.
As the nation navigates the uncertainties of the electoral process, the bishops called on citizens to remain united in their diversity and steadfast in their faith.
“Let us work together to build a nation where love, unity, and justice reign,” they appealed.
