NDOLA, DECEMBER 3, 2024 (CISA) – Most Rev Benjamin Phiri, archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ndola has called on Christians to hold firm in their faith and serve as instruments of peace and hope amid Zambia’s mounting challenges.
In a pastoral message of the Advent Season and speaking at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Ndola, Archbishop Phiri acknowledged the difficult realities facing the country, including economic struggles, the impacts of climate change, political instability, widespread power outages, and moral decay in society. These, he said, have left many disheartened and doubting God’s presence in their lives.
Quoting the reassuring words of the Prophet Jeremiah, he reminded the faithful, “Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah” (Jeremiah 33:14). Archbishop Phiri emphasized that Christians must anchor themselves in unwavering faith and trust in God’s promises, especially during times of uncertainty.
He drew from 2 Corinthians 5:7 to underline the nature of Christian life: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Faith, he said, is not passive but requires active participation. “It is not enough simply to wait for God’s promise without disposing ourselves for it,” he stated, urging believers to practice “active waiting” through prayer, repentance, and good works during the Advent season.
The archbishop also addressed the erosion of societal values, highlighting the breakdown of marriages due to infidelity and the rise of violence and evil. Despite these trials, he encouraged Christians not to lose hope. Citing James 1:2-3, he reminded the faithful, “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”
As the Church enters the Advent Season, Archbishop Phiri described Advent as a time of spiritual renewal, calling on the faithful to “promote unity in our society as we continue to strive for holiness.” He urged all Christians to actively contribute to peace in their communities by rejecting violence and divisiveness.
