OUGADOUGOU OCTOBER 2, 2015(CISA) – The leader of the failed military coup, General Gilbert Diendéré, former head of the Régiment de Sécurité Présidentielle (RSP), surrendered to the government after seeking refuge in the local Nunciature.
“Archbishop Piergiorgio Bertoldi, Apostolic Nuncio and His Eminence Cardinal Philippe Ouedraogo, Archbishop of Ouagadougou, and collaborators, Jean-Baptiste Ouedraogo, former Présidente, and Tulinabo S. Mushingi, US Ambassador, inform that General Diendéré Gilbert, who was welcomed in the Apostolic Nunciature for safety reasons as a result of recent events, surrendered to the competent authorities of Burkina Faso on 1 October 2015 at 2.30pm,” read a statement from the Secretariat of the Episcopal Conference of Burkina Faso.
Fides News reported that the local bishops were called today to pray for peace in the Country.
The prayer sessions included fasting, Eucharistic adoration and Mass of intercession in all parishes.
The Burkinabe bishops had condemned the in coup in the county in a September 25 statement saying that it brought about “fatal consequences including loss of life, injuries and destruction of property.”
