NAIROBI FEBRUARY 19, 2016 (CISA) – Each individual has a responsibility towards ensuring social justice in our community, Jamey Ponte, Director Jane Goodall Institute Roots & Shoots Kenya has said.
Mr Ponte was speaking during the just concluded Commemoration of the World Day of Social Justice Multidisciplinary Working Conference held at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA). “We need to take small actions as individuals and we should all play our little part in terms of good social work,” said Mr Ponte during the three day conference February 17 – 19 under the theme “Transformation towards Social Justice.”
Mr Ponte said that it is difficult to ask businesses or the government to fight injustice instead it is for all of us to handle injustice.
“That is the only way we are going to address social injustice,” he said and urged the youth especially those who had the privilege to be educated to act and help their communities beyond the classrooms and lecture halls.
“That is the only way the country is going to move forward and that is the way the world is going to move forward,” he said. The conference brought together; student community from several tertiary institutions, social justice practitioners largely from the East Africa Civil Society sector and policy makers who deliberated a wide range of topics including essentials of social justice transformation and governance and social justice.
In November 2007, the United Nations designated February 20 of every year as the World Day for Social Justice.
