ACCRA JULY 8, 2016(CISA)-Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has condemned reports of attacks to members of the judiciary allegedly made by two panelists during a radio discussion on an Accra-based Muntie FM.
“We, the members of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, have received media reports on the threat of attack on members of the Judiciary allegedly made by two panelists during a radio discussion on an Accra-based Muntie FM with a lot of worry and anxiety, and we wish to join individuals and groups which have already condemned this act,” the bishops said in a statement, July 5, signed by GCBC President, Bishop Joseph Osei-Bonsu of the Catholic Diocese of Konongo-Mampong.
The bishops called on the Ghanaians to shun hate speech as a measure to bring down the political temperature as the nation prepares for general elections due on November 7, 2016.
The bishops said that the threats to the judiciary was “a very serious matter” and called the Bureau of National Investigations “to arrest and investigate the two alleged panelists at the radio program.”
“Any attack on the Judiciary, the custodians of Law in our country, is an attack on our freedom and security as a nation. We are hopeful that the right course of action will be taken in this and other instances,” said the bishops. The bishops further urged “newspaper editors and producers of FM radio programmes” to be cautious when selecting individuals to discuss political issues.
“All Ghanaians, especially those who seek political office in our land should learn to speak words which bring harmony and peace,” the bishops added.
