NAIROBI, OCTOBER 16, 2024 (CISA)— Rt Rev Wallace Ng’ang’a was installed as the third Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Kenya in a ceremony marked by solemnity and gratitude for the critical role the Catholic Church plays in the lives of the country’s defense forces on October 12, 2024.
Bishop Wallace succeeds Bishop Alfred Kipkoech Rotich and the late Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga, continuing the mission of providing spiritual leadership to military personnel and their families.
During his installation, Bishop Wallace acknowledged the unique challenges that come with military service and assured the faithful of his commitment. He highlighted his role in walking with the military community and offering spiritual guidance during both moments of triumph and trial.
“As your bishop, I come not just as a leader but as a shepherd, a father, and a brother,” Bishop Wallace said.
The Military Ordinariate of Kenya was established in 1986 by Pope John Paul II to render spiritual and pastoral services to the military community. The first bishop, Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga, served from its inception in 1964 until 1997 when he retired. Under his leadership, the Ordinariate laid its foundational role in supporting soldiers, providing them with much-needed spiritual strength during times of conflict.
“Courage rooted in faith guides you as soldiers in defending our nation and upholding justice, but it also calls you to serve with love and compassion,” Bishop Wallace said.
Drawing inspiration from St. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 16:13-14, he urged the soldiers to stand firm in their faith and act with love in all their duties.
President William Ruto, who attended the installation ceremony, commended Bishop Wallace for taking on the responsibility of guiding the spiritual health of the military personnel. He stated that faith is a critical source of strength and a pillar of motivation for the armed forces. He congratulated the new bishop and reaffirmed the government’s support for the Catholic Church’s efforts in complementing national strategies.
“Your leadership will be vital in guiding those who defend our nation,” President Ruto remarked.
Bishop Wallace’s installation is seen as a continuation of the strong legacy left by his predecessors, with a focus on reinforcing unity, resilience, and ethical leadership among the defense forces.
