By Paschal Norbert

ORLU, OCTOBER 17, 2024 (CISA) –The Marist Formation Centre in Orlu recently hosted an important gathering of the Marist Brothers in partnership with the African Synodality Initiative (ASI). From October 15 to 17, a formation workshop on ” Strengthening Synodality: A Pathway for Deeper Communion and Mission among Marist Brothers” took place, bringing together participants to reflect on and strengthen their communal mission.

This collaboration aimed to explore the concept of synodality, a model of collective decision-making and shared discernment within the Church, while focusing on deepening communion among the Brothers and embracing Marist traditions. Over the course of three days, participants engaged in profound discussions about the importance of unity, collaboration, and inclusivity in their mission.

During the workshop, the significance of synodality was underscored as essential for fostering collaboration among lay partners, students, and the local Church. The Brothers emphasized the necessity of active listening—not just to the Holy Spirit but also to the voices of those they serve, including students and teachers. This approach encourages inclusivity and diversity, allowing all members of the community to contribute to the mission. Themes of humility, self-emptying, and servant leadership were prevalent, reminding attendees of the importance of maintaining a spirit of simplicity and care for one another as they work towards a common purpose.

Deepening communion emerged as a central focus, with communal prayer and brotherly encounters highlighted as vital practices. Participants recognized the importance of humility, self-knowledge, and empathy in their interactions, promoting an environment of tolerance and understanding. The gathering also emphasized the need for Marist ministries to actively educate and accompany marginalized youth, advocating for their needs and ensuring that inclusivity remains at the forefront of their mission. Collaboration and teamwork were seen as essential tools for embodying these values, fostering an atmosphere of supportive dialogue and collective action.

As the gathering progressed, practical applications of synodal principles were discussed extensively. The Marist Brothers committed to integrating these principles into their formation programs, encouraging open dialogue and decision-making processes that reflect their core values of modesty, simplicity, humility, family spirit, teamwork, and servant leadership. These principles will not only enhance the Brothers’ personal and communal lives but also ensure they are better equipped to respond to contemporary challenges in their ministries.

Looking forward, the Brothers identified several strategic areas for action. They committed to evaluating their dedication to Marist work, fostering open communication, and increasing their involvement in local church activities. Addressing individualism and promoting collaboration were identified as key priorities, as was the need to amplify marginalized voices and tackle pressing social justice issues. The gathering also explored new opportunities, including digital evangelization and intercultural dialogue, which could engage younger generations and enrich their outreach efforts.

At the end of the workshop, the Marist Brothers left the gathering with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment to embracing synodality in their daily lives. They recognized that by deepening communion and enhancing discernment, they could significantly amplify the impact of their mission within the Church and the communities they serve. As they move forward, the Brothers are determined to embody the principles of synodality, fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and servant leadership, ensuring that the spirit of the Marist tradition continues to thrive in contemporary society.
