VATICAN CITY, OCTOBER 18, 2024 (CISA) – The stage is set for the highly anticipated canonization of Blessed Joseph Allamano, founder of the Consolata Missionaries and Consolata Missionary Sisters, on Sunday, October 20, 2024.
Pope Francis will proclaim Allamano a saint during a special ceremony at St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
This momentous occasion has drawn pilgrims from around the globe, including faithful from nearly all 33 countries where the Consolata Missionaries are present. They have journeyed to Rome to witness this historic event.
The Holy See Press Office announced the canonization date on July 1, 2024, following the approval of Blessed Allamano’s cause during the Ordinary Public Consistory presided over by Pope Francis. During the ceremony, the pope and Cardinals, representing the Universal Church, unanimously agreed to proceed with the canonization of Allamano and 15 other Blesseds.
Among those set to be canonized alongside Allamano are Blessed Manuel Ruiz López and seven companions, Francesco, Mooti, and Raffaele Massabki, Marie-Léonie Paradis, and Elena Guerra. The beatified young Blessed Carlo Acutis, the first millennial to be made a saint, will be canonized at a later date.
The miracle attributed to Blessed Allamano, which led to his sainthood, involves the miraculous healing of Sorino Yanomami, an indigenous man from Brazil’s Amazon. Sorino survived a life-threatening jaguar attack in 1996 despite severe injuries, which included partial exposure of his brain. His extraordinary recovery is regarded as a testament to Allamano’s intercession.
Born in 1851 in Castelnuovo d’Asti, Italy, Joseph Allamano dedicated his life to missionary work. He founded the Consolata Missionaries in 1901 and the Consolata Missionary Sisters in 1910, with the first missionaries arriving in Kenya in 1902. He was beatified by St. Pope John Paul II in 1990.
All eyes are now on Vatican City as the world prepares to celebrate the life and legacy of this remarkable missionary on October 20, 2024.
