NAIROBI, MARCH 9, 2024 (CISA) – In the wake of severe flooding wreaking havoc across the country, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has expressed profound sympathy and solidarity with all those affected by this natural disaster.

In a press release dated May 7, Most Rev Maurice Muhatia Makumba, the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kisumu and chairman of the KCCB, emphasized the urgent need for collective action and compassion in response to the crisis.

In recent weeks, Kenya has witnessed relentless rainfall leading to catastrophic floods, resulting in loss of lives, widespread displacement and extensive property damage. In a poignant statement, Archbishop Muhatia invoked the words of Matthew 25: 35-36, underscoring the fundamental importance of extending aid to those in need. He expressed heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones and urged solidarity in prayer and support during this time of sorrow.

He particularly highlighted tragic incidents, including the capsizing of a boat in Garissa, loss of lives during river crossings in Makueni, and displacement of residents in Mai Mahiu and Kisumu. They urged authorities at all levels to prioritize disaster management efforts, mobilize resources effectively, and ensure swift action to save lives and protect property.

In this regard, KCCB has initiated an appeal across all dioceses for support from Christian faithful and Kenyans of goodwill. Contributions are being channelled through local parishes, diocesan offices, and designated relief services to provide aid to those in distress.

Archbishop Muhatia also emphasized the importance of collective effort and divine grace in overcoming the challenges posed by the floods. He urged for relentless prayer and tireless efforts to alleviate the suffering of affected communities, echoing the teachings of Christ to show compassion and generosity towards those in need.

In closing, he called upon all Kenyans to demonstrate God’s mercy through their actions during this time of distress. The organization reiterated its commitment to standing in solidarity with those affected by the floods and urged for continued support and assistance to restore hope and rebuild communities ravaged by the disaster.

As the nation grapples with the devastating impact of the floods, the message resonates as a beacon of hope and compassion, calling upon all to unite in solidarity and extend a helping hand to those in need.
