KENYA: Daystar University Don Makes History in Fukuoka, Japan

NAIROBI JUNE 14, 2016(CISA)-Kenyan Communication Don, Sr. Prof. Agnes Lucy Lando has made history in Fukuoka – Japan, by being the first African to be nominated to the position of member-at-large for the International Communication Association (ICA).

If the nomination goes through, Sr. Prof. Lando will not only be the first African to sit on the ICA board, but also the first to serve and represent the African region in ICA.

ICA is an academic association for scholars interested in the study, teaching and application of all aspects of human and mediated communication.

ICA began more than 60 years ago as a small organization of U.S. researchers and now is truly international with more than 4,300 members in over 80 countries. Since 2003, ICA has been officially associated with the United Nations as a non-governmental organization (NGO).

Addressing over 2,000 conference delegates from more than 80 countries on Saturday 11th June 2016 during ICA’s 66th Annual Conference in Fukuoka – Japan, the outgoing ICA President, Prof. Amy Jordan said that Sr. Prof. Lando was nominated to the member-at-large position on the ICA Board of Directors because of her active role in internationalizing ICA.

This, she said, has culminated into ICA holding the first ever ICA Regional Conference in Africa since its inception, more than 60 years ago.

The historic ICA Africa Regional Conference, dubbed ICAfrica, will take place in Nairobi, at Daystar University, from October 19 to 21 2016.

The theme of the Conference is Growing Communication Scholarship in Africa: Looking to the Past with Gratitude, the Present with Passion and the Future with Hope.

Sr. Lando is an Associate Professor of Communication and Media Studies and Assistant Head of Communication Department at Daystar University.

She is also the Conference Convener of the historic ICAfrica Regional Conference to be held in October 2016. Sr. Prof. Lando is currently in Fukuoka – Japan leading a 13-member team from Daystar University, for the 66th ICA annual Conference.

Together with Prof. Lando at the conference is Prof. Michael Bowen (Director Research), Faculty, Acting Corporate Affairs Manager, PhD students and Masters Students.

Sr. Lando obtained her PhD in Social Communication from the prestigious Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, in 2008 and was promoted to the position of Associate Professor by Daystar University in 2015.
