NAIROBI, Kenya, July 20, 2026 (CISA) – H.E. Michael Cardinal Czerny, SJ, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, has urged the Church in Eastern Africa to remain rooted in hope and become a force for unity, justice, and reconciliation as it journeys together in building God’s Kingdom.

Presiding over the Opening Mass of the 21st Plenary Assembly of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi, Cardinal Czerny addressed approximately 140 bishops, priests, religious, thousands of young people, lay faithful, and delegates from AMECEA member and affiliate countries.

Reflecting on the Gospel parables of the mustard seed, the wheat and weeds, and the yeast, the Cardinal said Christians should recognize God’s work even amid uncertainty and social challenges, noting that goodness continues to grow quietly through faith and perseverance.

Addressing young people, he echoed Pope Francis’ appeal, urging them not to allow themselves to be robbed of hope. He encouraged them to become authentic builders of bridges of communion while remaining faithful to the Gospel and their Christian identity.

The Cardinal said the Church is called to transform society from within through patient witness, dialogue, and service, rather than division or despair. He invited the faithful to become “weavers of hope,” sharing their gifts, especially with and for young people, so that Christ’s presence continues to flourish in communities across the region.

The Eucharistic celebration officially opened the 21st AMECEA Plenary Assembly, which has brought together Catholic bishops and delegates from Eastern Africa to reflect on the Church’s pastoral mission under the theme, “Christ, Source of Hope, Reconciliation and Peace: Building Bridges of Communion, Justice and Good Governance.”
