KENYA: Church and State must Collaborate in Education, Bishop says

NAIROBI, MAY 22, 2015(CISA) – There is need for a closer collaboration between the Church and state in the provision of quality education, Bishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba chair of the Kenya Catholic bishops Commission for education has said.

“Neither the Church nor the state can take each other for granted…education is a shared responsibility,” the bishop emphasized.

“The state has the obligation to provide education to all its citizens but the Church shares in this responsibility by desiring to bring humanity the achievement of its goal, that is full communion with God,” he said.

The bishop was speaking May 21 at an International Missionary Conference held at Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA).

The bishop warned against government policies that are hostile to the involvement of the Church in educational institutions.

“Faith and reason are complementary in the holistic development of an individual,” bishop Muhatia said, adding that, “Faith and education are like two wings on which a human being swings.”

Sr Mary Gitau, a Loreto sister and lecturer at the Tangaza University College emphasized on the need to include the teaching of Catholic values in catholic sponsored schools.

This according to Sr. Mary would aid in holistic formation of an individual because both intellectual and spiritual education is vital for full human self realization.
