DURBAN MAY 8, 2015(CISA) – The Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) has donated a sum of R100, 000 to help victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in the country.
The donation was made to the Pastoral Centre for refugees of the Archdiocese of Durban, one of the cities where most of the violent acts of xenophobia were registered, reported Fides.
Mr Makusha Hupenyu, the coordinator of the project expressed gratitude to the bishops for the donation and said it will go a long way to provide missing basic commodities.
The Bishops condemned the wave of xenophobia against foreigners from other African countries and Asia which left more than half a dozen people dead, including three South Africans.
Thousands were also displaced from their homes during the violence.
Migrants from all over the world, especially African countries, have flocked to the southern African nation’s cities and towns since the end of apartheid and the opening of South Africa’s borders in early 1990s, looking to escape the poverty and political intolerance in their home countries.
