KENYA: Defence Forces Thwart Al-shabaab Attack, Kills 11 Militants

LAMU, JUNE 16 2015(CISA)-The Kenya Defence Forces on Sunday June, 14 thwarted an attack by the al-Shabaab on a military camp in Baure, Lamu County, at the coast of Kenya.

The early morning attack resulted in the death of 11 militants and two KDF soldiers.

According to military spokesman, Colonel David Obonyo, the attackers invaded the KDF camp in Baure at around 5.45 am, prompting a fierce gunfight between them and the soldiers.

“The attack was aggressively repulsed and during the fire fight 11  al-Shabaab terrorist, including two fighters of Caucasian origin, were neutralised,” said Colonel Obonyo.

The attack occurred barely a day after inspector- general of police Joseph Boinnet issued an alert over impending attacks by the  al-Shabaab during the month of Ramadhan.

The attack came on the anniversary of last year’s attack on Mpeketoni in Lamu County where 70 people were killed.
Before the attack, earlier that night, at least 60-suspected terrorists raided Mangai Village, also in Lamu County gathered villagers from their homes and ordered them to gather at the Mangai Mosque, where the raiders preached for almost three hours.

Security forces have appealed to the public to report any suspicious characters to the police.

“We appeal to the locals in the area to report to the security agencies anybody seeking medical assistance or any suspicious-looking individuals who might attempt to hide in the area,” Colonel Obonyo said.
