NIGERIA: Bishop wants Christian Organization to Shun Politics

ABEOKUTA MAY 13, 2016(CISA)-Bishop Kayode Odetoyinbo of the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta has cautioned the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) not to drag itself into politics.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists as part of the SS Peter and Paul Church’s activities to mark the World Communication Day May 8 Bishop Odetoyinbo said “CAN is not a political party and should not be turned to a political party. Let God choose the right person for the association.”

Asked whether he will be vying for the presidency post of the foremost Christian association, he declined to state whether or not he would seek election to replace the outgoing president of the organization, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, Senior Pastor of Word of Life Bible Church.

“I can’t just wake up one day and say I want to be the president,” he said. “The Bishop’s conference has final say on that, so for now I am not saying I have interest,” said the prelate.

Bishop Odetoyinbo called on the appointed leaders of the Christians organization to ensure unity of all churches and that churches speak with one voice.

“The leadership should know‎ that all churches belong to him, and not leader of a section of the churches. The CAN should speak with one voice. CAN should reunite all churches,” he stated.

CAN is an Association of Christian Churches with distinct identities, recognizable Church structures and system of worship of one God in the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

It provides a forum where Church leaders meet to take joint actions on vital matters, especially on issues which affect the Christian Faith and the welfare of the generality of Nigerians.
