AKURE SEPTEMBER 13, 2016(CISA)-Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigerian, has appealed to President Mohammadu Buhari to do more to alleviate the current economic hardship in the country.
“A lot still needs to be done by the Federal Government in alleviating the sufferings of the masses in the face of the current economic hardship. The country should not be ruled with sentiments and there should be fairness and equality,” said Archbishop Kaigama of the catholic Archdiocese of Jos.
He called on the President “to avoid sentiments in running of the country and provide an environment of equity and justice for all Nigerians.”
Archbishop Kaigama was speaking when he opened the 2nd plenary session of the opening Mass of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigerian (CBCN) 2016, September 11 at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Church Akure, the Ondo state capital.
He said that the Church has always advocated all-inclusive governance in a bid to fast track national development saying various issues confronting Nigeria have been raised with President Muhammad Buhari with assurances that, he would act soon, reported Nigeria’s Daily Trust.
Speaking during the same event Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, Ondo State Governor commended the cooperation between the church and Government, stressing that his administration has brought smile to the faces of the people through the provision of good roads, infrastructural development, quality healthcare and urban renewal among others.
Dr Mimiko also noted that the government had a responsibility to curtail religious bigotry in the country. He urged religious leaders to continue to pray for the nation.
He also cautioned on inter-religious conflicts, saying they may lead the country into more danger that might be difficult to overcome. “Government has responsibility of bringing these bigots to book,” said Dr Mimiko.
“We are not comfortable with what the bigots are doing. What they are doing is most worrisome in Nigeria. The church has a major role to play by praying for Nigeria,” he said.
