SOKOTO APRIL 11, 2017 (CISA) – Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah of Sokoto diocese has called urged Catholic media in Nigeria to protect the integrity and sovereignty of the country while reporting violence and crises.
Speaking during the opening of the Association of Diocesan/Religious Directors of Social Communications in Nigeria’s first 2017 plenary meeting in Sokoto, Bishop Sokoto urged Catholic media journalists to take into consideration the ethics of the profession while reporting on activities in the country.
“We need to educate ourselves more to enable us to create the ethical basis for journalists and the profession of journalism to be respected,” CNSN quoted the bishop as saying on April 7.
He further urged the Catholic press members to work closely with the Church on social-economic, religious and political matters, aiming to efficiently educate and inform people and ensure stability, harmony and peace of the country.
Fr Sixtus Onuh of Sokoto parish supported the bishop saying that the situation had gotten to a point where there is no value for life and therefore the Catholic media should approach such stories carefully so as not to escalate the violence.
Nigeria has been experiencing violence in various parts most which are caused by the Boko Haram terrorist who have become a menace for Nigeria’s security forces, and have ruined the lives of many civilians.
